San Francisco Church Historical Marker – Home at Last

The University of Nueva Caceres Museum, in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), the City Events Protocol, and Public Information Office (CEPPIO), and the Naga City Tourism, has returned the 1950 San Francisco Church Historical Marker to its rightful place at the San Francisco Church last February 20, 2025.

Present at this significant occasion were representatives from the NHCP, led by Executive Director Carminda Arevalo, along with City Councilor and SP Committee Chair on Culture and the Arts Hon. Jose B. Perez (representing Mayor Nelson Legacion), UNC President Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya, Vicar General and Parish Priest of St. Francis of Assisi, Fr. Wilfred Almoneda, and Parish Pastoral Council headed by Mr. Benjamin Paculan.

The historical marker of San Francisco Church was housed at the UNC Museum for decades without any historical records confirming its provenance. The occasion is a testament to the university’s commitment to historical preservation and is a powerful reminder of Naga City’s rich cultural heritage and history.

Located at the city center facing Plaza Quince Martires, the church played a vital role in the colonial era. It was strategically positioned facing the old village of Pueblo de Naga across the Naga River. Notably, the San Francisco Church was where the Spaniards made their final stand in September 1898 before succumbing to revolutionary forces under Elias Angeles and Felix Plazo.
