Much sought-after by those who feel the need for the protection and special graces through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, this rite is held after a Pilgrim's Mass at the Basilica Minore. It is also possible to obtain a replica of the manto through the souvenir shop or by coordinating with the parish.

Done following a Pilgrim’s Mass (which follows a schedule) at the Basilica Minor de Peñafrancia, the “pagmamanto” consists of praying over a devotee while being covered by the mantle or cape worn by the miraculous image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

Also known as “Paglulukob ng manto”, the ritual is done with faith, invoking the intercession of the Virgin Mary for healing and protection. This takes root from the ancient Catholic supplication to Mary, “sub tuum presidium”, which means “beneath thy protection” (CFD Santa Maria Update, 2022).

Sub Tuum Praesidium

One of the oldest prayers for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The earliest version was found written in papyrus, dated around the 3rd Century.

Latin
Sub tuum praesidium confugimus,
Sancta Dei Genetrix.

Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus,
sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper,
Virgo gloriosa et benedicta.
Amen.

English
We fly to thy patronage,
O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin.
Amen.
