The Basilica Minore

The Minor Basilica and National Shrine of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia is one of the largest Marian pilgrimage sites in Asia.

Nestled in the heart of the Bicol Region, the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia (Basilica Minore y Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia) stands as a testament to the unwavering faith of the Bicolanos. This grand basilica, the only one in the region, is a beacon of devotion, drawing pilgrims from far and wide to honor the revered image of the Virgin Mary.

No visit to the basilica is complete without a stop at the Peñafrancia Souvenir and Novelty Shop, located just a stone’s throw away. Here, visitors can find an array of religious items, including crucifixes, estampitas, statuettes, and replicas of Ina’s mantle, a tangible reminder of their pilgrimage.

Significance

The basilica’s history dates back to 1976 when construction began on this magnificent edifice. It was completed in 1981 and later bestowed the prestigious title of Basilica Minore by the Holy See in 1985.

The heart of the basilica lies in the enshrined image of the Virgin Mary, commissioned by Rev. Fr. Miguel de Covarrubias in 1710. The basilica’s stunning stained glass windows, a testament to the artistry of local talent Pancho Piano, narrate the rich history of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Bicol region.
