Significance

Jose Maria Panganiban y Enverga (February 1, 1863 – August 19, 1890) was a prominent Filipino propagandist, linguist, and essayist, renowned for his contributions to La Solidaridad under the pen names “Jomapa” and “J.M.P.” Born in Mambulao (now Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte), he played a crucial role in the Filipino Propaganda Movement in Spain, advocating for Filipino rights and reforms through his impactful writings.

The JOMAPA Monument at Naga Central School I is a significant tribute to this national hero. Erected before the town of Mambulao was officially renamed Jose Panganiban, the monument stands as the oldest known homage to him. Situated prominently in front of the Gabaldon building, it reflects the deep respect and admiration for Panganiban’s contributions to Filipino society and his enduring legacy in the Bicol region.
