Established in 1785, the Holy Rosary Seminary stands as the oldest ecclesiastical and civil higher educational institution in Southern Luzon.

A wellspring of ecclesiastical education in the Bicol Region, it is the alma mater of Bishop Jorge Barlin, the first Filipino bishop. Since its establishment, it has produced some 22 bishops including the first Filipino Cardinal to serve in the Roman Curia, Jose Cardinal Sanchez, with Archbishop Rex Andrew Alarcon being the latest addition.

Also the alma mater of Bicol patriots and heroes, this Spanish-era structure constructed of bricks and tiles in 1785 within the Cathedral compound was originally built as vocation house.

National Historical Landmark

The Holy Rosary Minor Seminary was declared a National Historical Landmark on June 11, 1978 by the National Historical Institute (now the National Historical Commission of the Philippines). The text of the marker reads, in part: “By virtue of Presidential Decree No. 260, August 1, 1973, as amended by Decrees No. 375, January 14, 1974, and No. 1505, June 11, 1978, this seminary is hereby declared a National Historical Landmark.
