Ateneo de Naga University

This only Jesuit-run educational institution in Southern Luzon was used by the Japanese as a prison camp during World War II.

Ateneo de Naga University (AdNU), located in Naga City, Camarines Sur, is a private Catholic Jesuit institution run by the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. Established in 1940, AdNU has grown to become a prominent center for higher education in the Bicol Region

Significance

On 15 December 1941, the Japanese Imperial Forces captured Naga City and occupied Ateneo de Naga. What was supposed to be a new site to be freshly used by the students became the local garrison and concentration camp. All the Jesuits were put into prison except Bro. Sergio Adriatico who remained in the Faculty House (Jesuit Residence). Sometime during the occupation, a Shintoist Japanese general ordered the original cross to be demolished because it irritated him. (Source: Ateneo de Naga University Junior High School FB Page)
