NAGA CITY – Despite torrential downpours brought by the monsoon season, hundreds of thousands of devotees from across the Philippines and abroad participated in the iconic Fluvial Procession on September 21. The annual event commemorates the return of the sacred images of the Divino Rostro and the Virgin of Peñafrancia to their official home, the Basilica Minore in Naga City, after a nine-day novena at the Naga Cathedral.
As of 7:00 PM, the estimated crowd size had reached a staggering 1.5 million, surpassing the previous year’s record of 1.3 million, according to the City Government of Naga. The official count was provided by the Multi-Agency Coordination Group (MACG), which oversees public safety during the event.
A Journey of Faith and Devotion
The Fluvial Procession, a highlight of the Peñafrancia Festival, saw devotees lining the banks of the Naga River to witness the sacred images being carried on a beautifully decorated pagoda. The procession was accompanied by prayers, songs, and the rhythmic movements of the voyadores, who navigated the river with skill and reverence.
Pontifical Solemnity Mass
Following the fluvial procession, a Pontifical Solemnity Mass was held at the Basilica Minore. Archbishop Rex Andrew Clement Alarcon of Caceres presided over the Holy Mass, which was attended by guest Bishops, members of the Bicol clergy, and thousands of faithful devotees and pilgrims. The theme of the mass, “Se Siempre La Reina – Pamanang Banal: Atamanon, Padanayon, Palakupon,” emphasized the enduring devotion of devotees to the Virgin of Peñafrancia.
The Peñafrancia Festival is one of the Philippines’ most celebrated religious events, attracting millions of devotees from all walks of life. This year’s festival was particularly significant as it marked the centenary celebration of the canonical coronation of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
