Our Lady of Peñafrancia Parish Church

Original home of the venerated image of the Virgin of Penafrancia. This is also where the Plaza de Covarrubias can be found.

This is the original home of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia before the Peñafrancia Basilica was constructed. The parish church is also the location of the Plaza Miguel Robles de Covarrubias where a monument stands in his honor.

Fittingly, this is where the Traslacion takes off, marking the beginning of the Festival.

Significance

The history of Our Lady of Peñafrancia Church in Naga City is deeply intertwined with the devotion to its patroness, Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia. The story begins with Miguel Robles de Covarrubias, a seminarian at the University of Santo Tomas.

  • The Origins of Devotion: Miguel, deeply devoted to Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Spain, vowed to build a church in her honor after receiving numerous favors. He fulfilled this vow in 1710, constructing a small chapel along the Bicol River near Mt. Isarog. This chapel, built of bamboo and nipa, became the first shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Peñafrancia in the Philippines.
  • The Stone Church and Traslacion: In 1750, Bishop Isidoro de Arevalo built the present-day stone church. The image of the patron was moved to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral in 1864 due to space constraints, marking the first Traslacion, a tradition that continues to this day.
  • Parish Status and Historical Recognition: The shrine officially became a parish on October 30, 1973, with Fr. Concordio Sarte as its first parish priest. In 1940, the Philippine Historical Committee installed a historical marker at the church.
