The miraculous & canonically crowned image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia (Nuestra Señora del Santissimo Rosario de Peñafrancia de Naga) is considered as one of the most renowned Marian images in the Philippines and in the world. “Peña de Francia” refers to the mountain between Salamanca and Caceres, Spain where a black statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was found. In the Philippines, the devotion began in 1710 by Rev. Fr. Miguel Robles de Covarrubias.
AUREOLA
A halo studded with 12 Stars and plated in gold. symbolism of Mary in the book of revelation:
“A woman clothed with the sun… and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” – Rev. 12:1
ROSTRILLOS
An Adornment placed on the face to emphasize the splendor and radiance of the Blessed Mother and Child.
PLANCHA DE ORO
A large metal sheet covering the body of Ina, which serves as protection dress of the image.
PEAÑA
The base of Our Lady, it symbolizes the heavenly throne of the Virgin Mary, thus it is sometimes shaped as a cloud, adorned with Angels.
CROWN
A special honor is given to Mary, as the Queen of Heaven and Earth by placing an earthly crown, she who is the Mother of Jesus the King of Creation.
MANTO DE LA VIRGEN
A large cape that acts as the dress of the image. Usually made in gold embroidered or beaded. The standard colors of the Manto of Ina is usually white or gold. Devotees show their respect to the Lady by kissing the manto of Ina. this manifestation can also be referred to what the Woman with hemorrhage in the bible: “If i just touch is garments I will be healed “Jesus then replied to her “Daughter, your faith has saved you. – Mk. 5:28,34
