In the 17th Century Nueva Caceres, Fr. Miguel commissioned a local artisan to craft the image of the Virgin as part of fulfilling a vow he made in gratitude for the healing he received. To color the newly carved replica, a dog was killed, and its blood was used for the purpose. The dead dog was dumped into the river but was later seen swimming alive to run to its master’s house. According to reports, the miracle was witnessed by hundreds of people, among them some visiting Dominican Fathers.
As news of these miracles and others like it, devotion to the Virgin became more popular, spreading to the reaches of the Nueva Caceres (which then included not only the Bicol Region but also Tayabas (now Quezon), Marinduque, Laguna up to Palanan, Isabela along the Cordillera ranges).
