The Camino de Peñafrancia started from a shared vision among a handful of Bikolano Marian Devotees.
Dennis Marpuri of Ocampo, Camarines Sur, after experiencing a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, dreamed of developing a Camino de Penafrancia pilgrimage in Bicol patterned after the Camino de Santiago.
Atty. Vicente Dante P. Adan for his part, had been preparing for his first Camino when he shared what the Camino de Santiago is all about with Fr. Augusto M. Federico, Jr. and Ronald Bong A. Rodriguez. Fr. Federico, Jr. introduced Adan and Rodriguez to his cousin Dennis Marpuri.
In 2021, Rodriguez, Atty. Adan, Marpuri and Fr. Federico began charting a route for the Camino de Penafrancia. Allan Saavedra was invited to join the team to help document what would become the first-ever Camino de Peñafrancia route.
Three of them got infected with NCOV19 during the journey. Atty. Adan succumbed to the disease on May 1, 2021. Sabas ‘Abang’ Mabulo joined the group after Adan’s demise.
Together, the group agreed to continue the dream in honor of Atty. Adan. They paved the way for the early beginnings of the Camino de Peñafrancia.
